The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency has rejected a request from Pfizer to sell its ‘female Viagra’, following its decision to discontinue sale of the drug.
It is the first time a generic of Viagra, called sildenafil, has been approved for sale in the UK.
The drug is a prescription medicine that is used to treat erectile dysfunction, also known as impotence, or low sexual desire.
The UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced last month that it had made a decision to reject a request from Pfizer to sell its ‘female Viagra’, following its decision to discontinue sale of the drug.
A decision has been taken following a consultation with the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.
The MHRA has asked Pfizer to make a similar decision to sell the drug for a further six months.
Pfizer has not yet responded to requests for comment.
A separate MHRA decision was published last year following the same process with the drug’s licence renewed, the review concluded.
It was then published in November 2023, indicating that it had determined to remain with the drug and not seek re-patent or other licence-related services.
The latest decision comes after the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) in October 2023 rejected a request from a pharmaceutical company to sell its ‘female Viagra’.
The regulator said that it had no reason to believe that any generic of the drug had been approved for sale, but that Pfizer had made “clear” in its letter that it would not be making a similar decision “as a result of the MHRA decision, and in accordance with the company’s guidance to patients and clinicians”.
The MHRA had rejected the request, following the review by the agency, saying that the drug was not medically equivalent to the brand name Viagra.
The agency said that Pfizer’s decision to discontinue sale of the drug was “not a decision that can be justified” and that it would not change the pharmaceutical industry’s practices.
The company will be required to make its own decision as a result of the review by the regulator.
Pfizer, which is the UK’s largest pharma company, said it had decided to continue selling the drug to its patients.
Pfizer said: “The MHRA is aware of the recent and ongoing concerns raised by the regulator regarding the impact of the decision and is working with its relevant regulatory authority to provide more clarity on this decision and to provide patients with alternative information and alternative treatment options when deciding on whether or not to supply a medicine.
“It is our hope that the decision made by the MHRA will be reflected in the regulatory decisions regarding the sale of medicines to the public.
“In light of the ongoing and complex issues surrounding the supply of medicines to the public, it is our view that the regulatory authority should provide more clarity in its decision-making process.”
The MHRA said it is taking an additional step to ensure that the medicine remains available in pharmacies.
Pfizer was asked to make its decision based on information provided to the public and it had not made that decision.
